Not content with being a Gold medallist in ophthalmology in MBBS from Madras Medical College, Dr. Arulmozhi Varman continued his excellence by standing first in DO and MS in the same college. He has been pioneer in microsurgery and intra ocular implantation in the southern part of the country.

He has not only pioneered Phacoemulcification in India, but the first one to use Multifocal IOL's in India with longest and largest experience.
Dr. Arul Mozhi Varman has trained more than one hundred surgeons in phaco and has conducted over 150 phaco - training courses in India and abroad. He has presented various papers in State, Regional, National and International Conferences. He has also conducted instruction courses in American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and chaired sessions.

He has also been actively participating and has been secretary, treasurer of Tamil Nadu Opthalmic Association, Secretary Madras City Opthalmic Association. Also, he has been the member - Managing Committee All India Opthalmic Society, Chairman Scientific Committee of SROC 1999 and Organising secretary of SROC 2003.

First Eye Surgery to Correct Very High Refractive Errors in Chennai :

Dr.Arulmozhi Varman of Uma Eye Clinic in Annanagar, Chennai has performed a new and unique surgical procedure to correct severe short sightedness. He was the first doctor in chennai to perform Phakic Intraocular Lens Surgery. This new technique involves an artificial lens, which is implanted inside the eye without removing the natural lens to corect the very high refractive errors which cannot be treated with other conventional surgeries.

This is a boon for patients with high powers, who had no other treatment so far. It is an outpatient procedure which takes approximaterly twenty minutes. The lens has been linked to an implantable contact lens that is permanent and maintenence free.

Dr.Arulmozhi Varman has performed this exciting new surgery on 27/5/04 on his patient's left eye with -20 power and on the 29/5/04 for the patient's right eye which had -28 power. Patient was a 23 year old Software Engineer from London who was suffering from extreme short sightedness, who was dependent on a very thick glasses and contact lenses in his day to day life as a systems programmer and sfter having Phakic Intraocular Lenses implanted in both eyes, now has clear vision without lasses and is thriled with the results and changes in his life style.

Speaking about the surgery Dr.Arulmozhi Varman said "The unique characteristic of the Phakic intraocular lens is its ability to correct the vision of severe shortsight and long-sight patients, who may not be candidates for traditional refractive surgical procedures till now can avail this facility, and also said this new method is just catching on in the country".

Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), Germany, makes the lens to order after the corneal topography and the diameter of the patient's eyeball are e-mailed to it. The natural vaulting in the IOL keeps it away from the natural lens, thereby avoiding any contact, the natural lens is left in the eye after the IOL is placed, unlike other vision correction procedures which changes the refractive condition of the eye permanently, this Phakic IOL procedure is fully reversible.

Dr.Arulmozhi Varman was one among the few surgeons in India, who had undergone training on this procedure at Germany. Already one patient has undergone this surgery, who is having excellent result and few other patients have booked for this surgery.
