Meet Dr.Arulmozhi Varman, MS., DO.,
_Uma Eye Clinic is the brainchild of a second generation Opthalmologist Dr. Arulmozhi Varman.
He is a Gold medalist in ophthalmology from Madras Medical College and his batch topper in DO and MS at the same college.
He is a pioneer in microsurgery and intraocular implantation in South India. He introduced Phacoemulsification and the use of Multifocal IOLs in India. A master of phaco with the longest experience, he has trained more than 300 surgeons at this centre, has conducted over 150 phaco training courses in India and abroad, has conducted instruction courses in American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and has chaired sessions there. He has also presented various papers in state, regional, national and international conferences.
Dr. Arulmozhi Varman introduced Phakic Intraocular Lens Surgery in Chennai. He was one of the few surgeons in India who had undergone training for this procedure in Germany. The procedure involves implanting maintenance free artificial made to order lens from Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), Germany inside the eye without removing the natural lens. They are linked together and the natural vaulting in the IOL keeps them away from the natural lens. This totally reversible procedure for treating very high refractive errors is an outpatient procedure that takes about 20 minutes.
On 27-05-2004 a 23 year old Software Engineer from London with -20 power in the left eye and -28 power in the right eye became the first person to receive this new treatment in Chennai from Dr. Arulmozhi Varman. He was totally dependant on very thick glasses and contact lenses. The left eye was treated on 27-5-2004 and the right eye on 29-5-2004. Maintenance free artificial lenses were implanted inside the eyes and were linked to the natural lenses without removing them and he received clear vision without the aid of glasses transforming his life and opening new possibilities.
On the Surgery the doctor says, “The unique characteristic of the Phakic intraocular lens is its ability to correct the vision of severe shortsight and long-sight patients, who may not be candidates for the traditional refractive surgical procedures.” He said the new procedure is catching up in the country.
He has been an active participant of various associations and has been secretary, treasurer of Tamil Nadu Opthalmic Association, Secretary Madras City Opthalmic Association. He has also been a member of the Managing Committee All India Ophthalmic Society, Chairman Scientific Committee of SROC 1999 and Organising secretary of SROC 2003
